You Must Rent This One
Instead of going downtown to see what Halloween in Charleston might be, I stayed in the hotel room and watched several movies on my laptop computer (sorting through for clips that I will use in class today). The last movie I watched was the best. In fact, it was the best documentary I think I have ever seen. It is titled: Expelled and is a simple but profound movie by Ben Stein. It investigates the Darwinian mindset of the present age, in light of how it has been used in the past — particularly by Nazi Germany.
Forget the election. If you really want to change the world, rent this movie instead, and verbalize its findings.
I will be buying the movie and showing it to small groups at the parsonage over the next year.
It is amazing how we take viewpoints for granted, but not really realize the implications. We get used to the nomenclature and the erroneous assumptions. When they are acted out in society, we wonder why things have gotten so crazy. The longer I live, the more I realize the need for the church to be the conscience of a society — especially the ones that loses their way so easily (like this one). I also find it intellectually sobering to realize how easy it is for Christianity to be used by spirit-denying forces…to its own demise.
Today is All Saints Day — a time to embrace the memories of those brave individuals that went before us. After a few moments of admiration, it is time to do our part too. An occasional nod toward the past is essential for meaningful living. It shines a bit of light on our present, but you cannot live in it. There is a day ahead. Heads up! This is the day the Lord has made…
