The Power of Non-Resistance

by Dale Andrews on August 25th, 2008

It does not have to go my way. It does not have to go your way. There is a way of winning by letting things take their natural course. This is the wisdom of the greats that went before us. They did not fight impossible battles of ego. Instead, they went with the flow of the social momentum. The way they changed everything was by the style in which they went along.
Jesus encouraged people to “turn the other cheek” when being struck. The non-resistance of the one being struck trumps the one doing the striking. It is more powerful not to strike back. Jesus allowed others to crucify him. By doing so, he won. His winning was in his style. He died with dignity and honor, while being treated as a common criminal.
We live in a world that clamors for its “rights” to social privileges. With lawyers in tow, many make their way through the world as victims demanding their due. They have their day in court, but discover that they are losers for having won. In the paradox of spirituality, losing is far better. It is the ego that has to win, not the spirit. The spirit is content to transcend the entire situation. It soars above the petty.
Jesus illustrated this by saying, “If someone sues you for your outer garment, give him your inner one too.” You win by not being attached to winning. You rise above the petty greed of the other person or some institution. They think having their way is superior, but it is vastly inferior in the spiritual realm. Defeating the soul to win is the ultimate loss.
