Something Else Is Happening
I have always had a keen awareness that something greater than physical life is going on. I just cannot seem to fully detect or describe it. For all of the adaptations of the human body over the centuries, I have never bought into the idea that we are merely highly evolved animals. For one thing, there are no “sub-species” of humans out there. In fact, in complete contradiction to all other mammals, there is only one species called human. That cannot be right — unless something else is happening that we have not included in the equation (and have yet to find).
Sometimes I call it “Divine Paranoia” — the feeling that something grand is unfolding. The planet fits us too well. It offers such an abundance for our creativity. We are not the physically strongest creatures on the planet — far from it, but we have the uncanny ability to study ourselves. Yes, we apparently went through a primitive period in our development. However, art was from the beginning. Creativity over survival? There are things we try so hard to communicate. What we cannot explain are the quantum leaps in our intellectual abilities. Are we merely adapting?
I think not.
We are simultaneously like and unlike the rest of life. Dolphins may be highly evolved, but they have not built any libraries. They instinctually protect human swimmers when they get in trouble. Do they know something about us that we do not know about ourselves? It all transcends analysis. At the same time, it is worth our full attention. Why is there an innate sense that life continues for us individually after our bodies fail?
I know that my questions are like that of a child. I wander through life like a five year old in Disneyland. At the same time, I have studied the great theorists and philosophers with the same result: wandering and wondering. Something else is happening. My intuition almost screams it.
