Forever Optimistic

There are only two choices. You can be an optimist or a pessimist. There is no third category. There is no such thing as a neutralist. The scales of your psyche tip one way or the other. There is short-range pessimism. I have this on a number of subjects and situations, but they are balanced by one long-term optimism. Sooner or later the phrase will come true, “on earth as it is in heaven.” All I have to do is pray and wait.

There are some things in my life that are doomed, but the essence of the universe is not. History is not measured by its wars but its times of peace and prosperity. Sooner or later, the demagogues die of natural (and sometime un-natural causes). All you have to do is pray and wait.

A certain destiny lies within the entire creation. From the first sin to the last martyr, the drama is played out. God knows all. What is being revealed is the character of Deity. Watch as it unfolds. There always appears to be a dark foreboding cloud just ahead. Despite its initial damage, it breaks into a driving rain that waters the dormant desert seeds that then spring into beautiful flowers.

Immediate pessimism is justified, but not long-range. Optimism wins out eventually. The dust clears. People go back to the land — to the basics of love, children, and enjoying just being alive.

Personally, though I live by the day, the year, and the decade, I measure life by the century and the eon. Once you get a glimpse of the big picture, you cannot help but be an optimist. God’s character is at stake. Ultimately, life is not “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury.” It is one seamless robe. Embraced by an optimistic mysticism, it is a mirror of God.
