Open Seas
I hope your life is like an adventure on open seas. Following in the wake of others is safe but very tedious and boring. Jesus was a conformist in the non-essentials but a non-conformist of the Spirit. I hope you are too. Most people have that backwards. They try to be non-conformist externally, but internally they follow one crowd or another. They put a lot of time, attention, and money into being superficially different, but miss the act of real courage: spiritual uniqueness.
It is not the Jesus had a new idea about love. It is that he was willing to let it sail beyond the buoys. He turned it loose. He released it from its accepted moorings, and let it float to lepers, demoniacs, Gentiles, and all others needing it. For that he was condemned to death. His resurrection was proof that God was not willing to let that much loving creativity stay in the grave.
As a human, it is difficult not to imitate others (wearing a toga that fits all sizes sure would be less expensive than having to re-fill the closet each time you change sizes). The annual IRS forms remind you how well categorized we can all become. The same it true each time you fill out a form or use your credit card. You are a number fitting into a system.
Do not worry. I am not a sixties leftover looking for external uniqueness. I am like you — a person with a unique calling on this planet and determined to fulfill it as a divine mission. Right now the political process is trying to dock us in one harbor or the other. Me? I think I will stay on the open sea. There is where the adventures of life are found. The horizon beckons me more than the dock. The lone craft cannot hide in the flotilla.
Eyes elevated to great distances are not focused on trivialities. Distant shores are more inviting. The journey in rough seas to get there are tests of soul designed to make us stronger. We want to arrive mature. For however routine your job may be today, let your soul sail on open seas. Notice how you relax when your inner gaze is elevated. Enjoy the adventures of the Spirit.
