One Quiet Moment

Every so often you may have an “Elijah Moment” — a time when you sense a re-empowering by the Divine. It will come after you have given up. Your soul is empty. There is not an ounce of spiritual energy left. The smallest task seems overwhelming. All you want to do is run away and hide. You doubt your own choices and wonder if everyone considers you a fool.

Like Elijah, you have expended a great deal of energy in the right direction, but it seems that you have been ineffective. For some it has to do with finishing a degree or even just a semester; others feel this after the last child has left home; sometimes is comes several years into a new job or after fighting a long-term health problem.

The great events no longer seem to inspire you. The thundering natural signs of God’s power — earthquakes and storms — cease to hold your attention. The thrill of Disneyland is gone. All you want is one quiet moment and the whisper that lets you know that God still cares. It is the subtle miracle of a word from a caring friend that Deity may use. Looking into the sky is not as revealing as listening to a child. God is more likely to be beside us and within us than approaching in some apocalyptic event.

Somewhere in the helter skelter of this day that quiet moment will reveal itself. The energy will then be there to pick up the next tool, to go to the next task, to hit the next key, and to take on the next load. Just let one quiet moment find you and you are almost home.
