Little Units

Life is a series of little units of reality. Settle down into each one and do each one as it comes along. That may sound simplistic, but it is the art of the truly successful. Self-defeating addictiveness is trying to live by “gulping down” reality. That does not work. Time was created to pace everything. That pace is in very small units. By the time you get to work, you have done hundreds of very small things. Joy is found in being at peace in each of those small things.

Worrying is the negative anticipation of what might happen in any of the future units of reality. It is a waste of energy and a waste of time. Just stay where you are. Hit the ball when it comes over the net, and then wait for the ball to return. The genius in life is in the waiting. Ultimate reality will give you the day it intends at its own pace — not yours. Patience is more than a virtue. It is the foundation of basic sanity.

Do not get ahead of yourself. All that should happen will happen. What determines that is much bigger than you are. You too are a unit of reality in the grand scheme of things — and you count. Great buildings are built one brick at a time…one board at a time…one nail at a time…

Great lives are the result of paying attention to the little things. Live in the day you have. Learn from but forget the past. Look forward but do not try to live beyond where you are right now. Right now is all you need. The next unit of reality is on its way, and it will be different. The tennis ball of life is coming back over the net. It will come to you within your reach.

Anxiety is a habit. It is one thing to look forward, it is quite another to create monsters that are not there. Life comes to us at the pace of breathing. More is accomplished and enjoyed in deep, slow breaths.
