Little Adventures
You do not have to go very far to have a little adventure. Sometimes a trip to the gas station is sufficient. One day, in El Paso, Texas, I was filling up my pickup when, for some unknown reason, I noticed the emergency shutoff button on the wall of the station. I thought it was odd that I would see it. I had never really noticed it before. I had just finished filling up when I heard the sound of something splashing. I turned toward the sound and noticed that a person had panicked and pulled the filler from the gas tank and was aiming it my direction. She had a terrified look on her face. Gasoline was going everywhere. One spark and the place would be consumed in flames — she certainly would be. It only took me a few quick, long steps to get to the the emergency shutoff. No spark. No flame. Everyone was okay.
To this day, I still wonder how some invisible angel got me to notice the emergency shutoff — only moments before I needed to hit it. I know that it was no accident. I had never noticed those switches before, but I have noticed them numerous times ever since. I thank God that there was not a spark, and I still wonder about the timing of it all. Usually, I am lost in my head — pondering something philosophic. I do not normally notice such “insignificant” details as an emergency switch or a fire extinguisher.
What would have been just another forgotten little routine event became a little adventure in awareness. The angel hinting that I needed to be a little more aware of my surroundings had been heard. You never know when your angel may tap you on the mental shoulder and point to some little something you need to know. Pay attention!
For all of my theological pursuits, the real proofs for the metaphysical (unseen) world have not come through well-reasoned books on the subject. They have come from the little coincidences that were not merely coincidences at all.
