God’s Speed Limit

by Dale Andrews on July 8th, 2008

There are certain limitations built into our DNA. Humans can only be human. God has a “speed limit” to everything we are and do. We can only eat one meal at a time, and the digestive tract really does not care if we paid $2.95 or $29.95 for the meal. Protein is protein. However it tastes, the sensation lasts for a very short period of time. We can only wear one set of clothes at a time, and only be in one room at a time. Whether it is a mansion or an igloo, the nervous system will call it home after just a few days.
Greed is nonsensical. Chasing the illusion of security is a form of insanity. The fountain of youth is a myth. Whatever it is to be human, it is limited. The people flying coach get to the terminal the same time the people in first class. The plane is one unit. (Quite frankly, coach is more entertaining and you are far more likely to survive a crash if you are in the tail of the plane.)
Time is the same for all. We breathe the same air and hear the same sounds. “Getting ahead” is illusory. We pretty much all arrive at the grave the same way (our bodies fail). Mowing the lawn can be as entertaining as a day of shopping — if you use your imagination (I like chasing frogs with my lawnmower). It is far more fun to listen to the “spit and whittle” guys at the local restaurant than to pay big money for a stand-up comic in Las Vegas.
Relax, all you need in life is right in front of you. Tuxedos are pretty uncomfortable, and they look pretty silly when you have to change a flat. We can pick our style, but it is unlikely that we can actually pick reality. Somehow, we adjust to whatever is taking place. It is a blessing from God. A quick read through the book of Ecclesiastes will confirm this — and it was written thousands of years ago. Respect the speed limit and have a little fun along the way, you really don’t have a lot of choice. It is only human to be human.
