Fairies on Strike
Have you ever opened the refrigerator door, looked in, and noticed there was nothing to eat? That is normal. It happens all of the time. Do you ever go back to the same refrigerator and look again just in case some great serving of food magically materialized? Probably yes. That too is a common human action — mostly because we believe in refrigerator fairies.
We humans have a childlike propensity for magic. There should be an unexpected surprise every now and then. The adult side of us is not surprised that the magic piece of pie did not suddenly appear five minutes after we last looked in the fridge. I am not really sure what it is we are looking for in the refrigerator or the empty mailbox. I think it has to do with something else a little deeper in our souls. Maybe the magic genie is hiding under the bed with the dust bunnies, anxious waiting his or her opportunity to grant us three wishes. One can only hope.
Right now all of my personal fairies are on strike: the car wash fairy, the buy groceries fairy, the vacuum fairy, the lawn fairy, the buy clothes fairy, and the magic bank account fairy. I guess there are some things I am going to have to face and actually do. It is a little like the line from the book of James about faith and works. You can have all of the faith in the world about God’s providence, but you are going to have to do a little work too. Faith is something lived and accomplished and not just waiting on the Lord. It involves action — not just wishful thoughts.
