Clown Power

by Dale Andrews on June 14th, 2010

The human psyche functions like a king or queen in his or her court. It has a variety of characters — all of which are various manifestations of your greater self. Sometimes they are at play; sometimes they are in court; much of the time they are at an inner banquet or dinner party around a large table. Listen in on their various conversations and get to know yourself. Most of all, spend some time with your inner clown — your very own court jester.

The court jester has the king’s ear. He is more than an entertainer; he is the sage in a clown suit mocking the all-too-serious. Of all of the inner actors, I rely most on my inner clown. Yes, there is an inner theologian, a wizard/cosmic doctor, a peasant, a lawyer, and a host of other characters. We are many but one — thus reflecting the creative power of the Creator (that is also many but One). They all have their place, but the clown and I are exceptionally close.

I have come to appreciate the power of the clown. He helps me see through the endless political and power charades at every level and in every era. He even pokes fun at me, but does it in a way to help me see how much I need my own inadequacies to be fully human. My clown has kept me from buying many trendy trinkets and worthless things but has encouraged me to buy some really fun plane tickets. The clown is glimpsed from the corner of the eye. Anytime I see a sales call on the caller ID, he is the one that answers the phone.

Over the years, I have discovered that I cannot always think my way through complex situations, but I can laugh my way through them. The jester is on your side even when he is making light of you. Have the ego strength to put up with him and read between the lines of his silliness. He will get you out of a lot more trouble than he has gotten you into. Better yet, he will teach you how to see your own mistakes positively.

If you do not have a clown to get you through the absurdities of life, I recommend that you get one. He or she is in there somewhere — maybe confined to your dungeon. You are not getting out of this one alive, so have a little fun along the way.
