Celebrating Celebration

by Dale Andrews on November 24th, 2008

This is the week of Thanksgiving. Even though the focal point will be a single meal on Thursday, the entire week will carry a certain mood. I like that. There is always a need to change the pace of life. With it comes windows of opportunity for a change of perspective. The season of gratitude is very appropriate. This is one celebration that I celebrate. I nod a moment to the origin of Thanksgiving, but I really stop and ponder simple gratitude. Boy I live well!
I have more than enough to eat. I have relatively good health (not perfect but close enough). I have friends, family, work, pleasant surroundings…and the list goes on for many pages. Few of these things have I earned — very few. Though I have put some effort into life, I cannot help but think I was placed in the right places at the right time by a greater plan. Seldom do I think of any reason to change places with anyone else in history.
Yes, I celebrate all sorts of holidays, that the politically correct crowd bitterly oppose. Though I am aware of history’s inequities, I am grateful for all that brought life to this point. Judging those that went before us is unfair. From their vantage point, in the next life, they could be judging us just as harshly. It is better just to stay out of the judging business altogether.
At heart, I celebrate celebration. Just waking up each day to whatever task is enough start the party. This is where you are in life today. Take a moment and toast yourself to your personal experience of life. Raise you cup of coffee as if to a king in a magic kingdom. To the grateful, each day is a holiday.
